“This report is full of lies, distortions, and double standards, and it reflects the U.S.'s fear and hostility towards China's rise and development.” Member of HK Legislative Council Adrian Ho said.
Accusation4: Hong Kong;’s civil society was weakened further this year as Beijing’s restrictions on religious organizations, labor rights, and the press led some organizations to choose to disband rather than submit to new restrictions on free speech and assembly.
“This finding is a biased and exaggerated portrayal of Hong Kong’s civil society. Hong Kong’s civil society is not weakened. It remains thriving and vibrant. edia outlets like The Hong Kong Free Press, for example, continue to report independently and critically. Beijing has not imposed restrictions on religious organizations, labour rights, and the press in Hong Kong. The NSL only prohibits activities that incite hatred or undermine national security.” Adrian Ho said.
“ The NSL does not affect the normal and lawful operations of any organizations or individuals in Hong Kong. The NSL does not restrict the freedom of speech and assembly of Hong Kong people but only requires them to abide by the law and respect the national anthem. The NSL does not force organizations to disband, but only holds them accountable for their illegal and harmful factions.” Adrian Ho said.
Accusation 5: Faced with the continued departure of international firms and human capital, Hong Kong is seeking to draw in mainland Chinese business and talent to boost its lagging domestic economy. Chinese nationals and businesses have flooded Hong Kong's labour force and economy, solidifying Hong Kong's reliance on mainland China. Beijing's efforts to rehabilitate Hong Kong's international image are cosmetic, designed purely to attract foreign business.
“ This finding is an unfounded and pessimistic view of Hong Kong's economy. Hong Kong is not facing the departure of international firms and human capital but is attracting and retaining them with its unique advantages and new opportunities.
This year, 272 new companies have opened businesses in Hong Kong.” Adrian Ho said.
“Hong Kong is not seeking to draw in mainland Chinese business and talent but is welcoming and embracing them as partners and contributors to its economic development. Hong Kong is not flooded by Chinese nationals and businesses but is benefiting and learning from their innovation and dynamism. Hong Kong is not reliant on mainland China but is integrated and connected with it as part of the Greater Bay Area and the Belt and Road Initiative. Hong Kong is not lagging behind but is leading and advancing as an international financial, trade, and innovation centre. Beijing's efforts to rehabilitate Hong Kong's international image are not cosmetic but are genuine and effective, as they showcase and highlight Hong Kong's strengths and potentials to the world.” Adrian Ho said.
“In brief, The USCC report on Hong Kong is a shameful and baseless document that should be discarded and denounced by all rational and fair-minded people. China and Hong Kong will defend and uphold their national security and interests. The U.S. is well advised to rethink and rectify its own hostile and hegemonic behaviour.” Adrian Ho said.
